Unique in Switzerland, the Basel Tattoo is one of the world‘s largest and most successful open-air tattoos. With tunes known the world over played to brilliantly choreographed marching routines, it‘s a dazzling spectacle of colour and light presented before the grand backdrop of the Basel barracks. Since its premiere in 2006, no fewer than 360,000 spectators have enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Tattoo. July 2012 will again find more than one thousand performers from the world‘s top ensembles presenting a show brimming with highlights and shaking the arena to its very foundations. 

The venue 

The historic barracks in the heart of Basel create an imposing setting for the 7800-seater arena. The Basel Tattoo is one of the world‘s few tattoos still being presented at its original venue. 

The show 

The Basel Tattoo tells the story of different cultures, of tradition and innovation, of being Swiss and cool – served up with a healthy dash of humour. The march music presented at the Basel Tattoo is anything but outmoded: whether it‘s hits from Michael Jackson, Queen, the Beatles or Elvis Presley, the Basel Tattoo represents a headlong rush through several hundred years of musical history – and an exposé of contemporary sounds and exotic sensations. Top musicians parade complex choreographies, drumming virtuosos display breathtaking synchronicity, while the Massed Pipes & Drums transform the inner courtyard of the barracks into a musical version of the Scottish Highlands. The two-hour shows kick off with the traditional fanfare and continue with rousing performances featuring music that has to be heard to be believed.
